William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire

Early Life and Political Career

William Cavendish, the 4th Duke of Devonshire, was born into the wealthy Cavendish family. He was elected to the House of Commons in 1741 and served in various deputy lieutenant roles in Staffordshire and Derbyshire. In 1751, he entered the House of Lords as the Earl of Devonshire and Baron Cavendish of Hardwick.

Office and Titles

From 1751, Devonshire held several positions, including a seat in the Privy Council, Master of the Horse, Lord High Treasurer of Ireland, and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. In 1755, he became the 4th Duke of Devonshire.

Prime Ministership

At the age of 36, Devonshire was elected Prime Minister. His time in office lasted only 225 days, from November 16, 1756, to June 25, 1757.

Marriage and Family

In 1748, Devonshire married Charlotte Elizabeth Boyle, Baroness Clifford. They had four children:

Lady Dorothy, who married William Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland, also a Prime Minister

Legacy

William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire, was a significant figure in 18th-century British politics. His tenure as Prime Minister was brief, but he held numerous other offices and contributed to the Cavendish family's prominence in public life.
