William Fichtner was born to Patricia and William Fichtner and has German ancestry. His sister is a colonel in the United States Air Force. After graduating from Farmingdale State College with a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice in 1978, Fichtner decided to pursue acting and attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City.

Early Career

Fichtner's early works include roles in the little-noticed film "Ramona" (1990) and a small appearance as a police officer in Spike Lee's biographical drama "Malcolm X" (1992). In 1994, he played a studio manager in the historical drama "Quiz Show" and in 1995, he appeared in the sci-fi film "Virtuosity" with Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe, as well as in Kathryn Bigelow's "Strange Days" with Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Lewis. He also portrayed a villainous banker in the crime film "Heat" alongside famous actors Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Val Kilmer.
