William Kroll: An American Violinist and Composer
William Kroll was an American violinist and composer known for his contributions to chamber music. Born in 1901, Kroll began his musical education at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik, studying under Henri Marteau from 1911 to 1914. He continued his studies at the Institute of Musical Art under Franz Kneisel and Percy Goetschius from 1917 to 1922.
A Career in Chamber Music
From 1922 to 1934, Kroll was a member of the renowned Elshuco Trio, gaining recognition as a skilled violinist. After leaving the trio, he performed with various chamber ensembles and eventually formed his own string quartet, which he led from 1944 to 1969. In the late 1960s, he frequently collaborated with pianist Arthur Balsam, delighting audiences with their duet performances.
A Distinguished Teaching Career
In addition to his performance career, Kroll was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Juilliard School from 1922 to 1938, the Peabody Conservatory from 1947 to 1965, and the Cleveland Institute of Music from 1964 to 1967. He also taught at the Tanglewood Music Center, a summer school for aspiring musicians, starting in 1949.
Chamber Music Compositions
Kroll's compositions predominantly focused on chamber music. Among his notable works are "Four Characteristic Pieces for String Quartet" (1935) and "Four Bagatelles for String Quartet" (1943). He also composed numerous pieces for violin and piano, with his most popular piece being "Banjo and Fiddle" (1945), which was frequently performed by violinist Jascha Heifetz as an encore.
