Early Life and Education
William Hootkins was born in Dallas, Texas, but spent much of his childhood in London, England. He attended Princeton University, where he studied English and was actively involved in the Theatre Intime group. He also contributed to Orson Welles' "Moby Dick Rehearsed." Hootkins later continued his acting training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
Acting Career
Theater:In England, Hootkins worked extensively in theater. His most notable role was as Alfred Hitchcock in Terry Johnson's cult play "Hitchcock Blonde," which he performed at the Royal Court Theatre and in the West End in 2003.
Film and Television:Hootkins played memorable supporting roles in Hollywood blockbusters such as "Star Wars," "Batman," and "Raiders of the Lost Ark." He also had substantial roles in "Hardware," "Like Father, Like Santa," and "Hear My Song." Hootkins appeared in several television shows as well.
Voiceover Work
Hootkins was also known for his extensive voiceover work. He provided voices for characters ranging from Edgar Hoover and Orson Welles to Winston Churchill. He recorded numerous audiobooks, including works by Jack London, Henry Longfellow, and the unabridged version of Herman Melville's "Moby Dick." Hootkins also lent his voice to characters in several video games.
Kennedy Assassination Connection
At the age of fifteen, Hootkins was questioned by the FBI investigating the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. He had been acquainted with Ruth Paine, the woman who harbored Marina Oswald, the Russian wife of prime suspect Lee Harvey Oswald. Hootkins had studied Russian with Paine at a Dallas school.
Death
William Hootkins passed away in October 2005, at the age of 57, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He is remembered for his distinctive character roles and voiceover performances that brought countless beloved characters to life.
