Biography of William Nicholson
William Nicholson was an English artist, printmaker, and children's writer. He was born into a family of manufacturers and studied painting at the Hubert von Herkomer's art school.
Innovators in Poster Art
Together with his brother-in-law James Pryde, Nicholson opened an art studio where they worked from 1894 to 1898, producing magnificent graphic works and woodcuts for modern-style posters. Nicholson and Pryde became pioneers in the field of poster art in late 19th-century England. They introduced the idea of minimizing the size of text on the sheet to maximize the impact of the image. The artists simplified the lines of the drawings and reduced the number of colors used. Nicholson and Pryde's works had a significant influence on the development of the poster in Germany and France in the early 20th century.
Focus on Painting and Olympic Success
After 1900, following advice from James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Nicholson increasingly dedicated his attention to painting. In 1928, he won a gold medal in graphic art at the art competitions during the Amsterdam Olympics. In 1936, he was knighted.
Accomplished Illustrator and Children's Writer
William Nicholson was also well-known as a book illustrator, contributing to works by Robert Graves, among others. He was also an author of children's novels, including "Clever Bill" (1928) and "The Pirate Twins" (1929). In addition to his other artistic pursuits, he also created colorful stained glass windows for churches.
