Early Life and EducationOlaf Stapledon was born into a family of intellectuals in Merseyside, England. From 1887 to 1893, he lived in Port Said, Egypt, where his father worked as a shipping agent. Upon his return to England, Stapledon attended Abbotsholme School and Balliol College, Oxford, graduating with a degree in modern history. He later earned a master's degree in the same subject.
Career as a Teacher and Expeditor
From 1910 to 1911, Stapledon served as deputy headmaster of a school in Manchester. He then transitioned into a career as an expediter, working in Liverpool and Port Said. During World War I, Stapledon, a pacifist, refused to participate in combat. Instead, he served in the Quaker Sanitary Unit in France and Belgium from 1915 to 1919.
Literary Beginnings and Philosophy
Stapledon's first published work was a collection of poems titled "Latter-Day Psalms" in 1914. After the war, he began writing on philosophical and social issues. In 1925, he earned a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Liverpool. Stapledon's philosophical writings advocated for pacifism and the importance of reason and cooperation.

In 1930, Stapledon published his debut science fiction novel, "Last and First Men." The book, an epic history of the future, received critical acclaim from H.G. Wells and J.B. Priestley. Stapledon followed with several other acclaimed novels, including "Odd John" (1935), "Star Maker" (1937), and "Sirius" (1944). His works explored themes of human evolution, the nature of consciousness, and the vastness of the universe.
