William Ruto: A Journey from Activism to the Presidency
Early Life and EducationWilliam Ruto was born on December 21, 1966, in Kamagut village. He attended local elementary school and went on to the University of Nairobi in the early 1980s, where he studied botany and engaged in activism.
Political Beginnings
Ruto's political career began in 1992, when he campaigned for Daniel arap Moi's re-election. He subsequently served as an aide to several Kenyan Members of Parliament. In 1997, he was elected to the Kenyan Parliament for the first time.
Aspirations and Setbacks
Ruto intended to run for the presidency in 2007 under the Orange Democratic Movement. However, he placed third in the party primaries, receiving 368 votes.
Government Service
Despite the setback, Ruto continued his political involvement. From 2012 onwards, he held various ministerial positions in the Kenyan government. He was elected Deputy President in August and October 2013, and again in 2018.
Academic Achievement
In 2018, Ruto earned a PhD in Plant Ecology for his dissertation on "The Impact of Human Activities on Land Use and Changes on Environmental Quality of Coastal Ecosystems: A Case Study of Saiwa Swamp Watershed in Western Kenya."
Presidential Election
Ruto contested the 2022 presidential election and emerged victorious. He was sworn in as the 5th President of Kenya on September 13, 2022.
