William Aiton the Younger: A Notable Botanist and Head Gardener

William Aiton the Younger, an accomplished English botanist and gardener, inherited his father's legacy as the Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew.

Royal Horticulture and Legacy

Under the patronage of King George IV, Aiton the Younger expanded his horticultural endeavors, designing the gardens at Brighton and Buckingham Palace. His meticulous work also included the preparation and publication of a revised and expanded edition of his father's renowned botanical encyclopedia, "Hortus Kewensis," which spanned five volumes and was published in London from 1810 to 1813.

Continuing the Family's Horticultural Legacy

Born as the son and successor to William Aiton (1731-1793), Aiton the Younger inherited not only his father's position at Kew but also his passion for botany and gardening. His contributions to horticulture, building upon the foundation laid by his father, solidified the Aiton family's prominence in the annals of British horticulture.
