Biography of William Trubridge

William Trubridge, born in 1980 in England, is a New Zealand freediver who holds the record for the deepest dive without scuba gear, reaching a depth of 121 meters. He is often referred to as the Absolute Freediver, the best freediver in the world.

Early Life and Introduction to Freediving

At the age of one and a half, Trubridge's parents sold their home, bought a yacht with the proceeds, and embarked on a journey across the oceans. This journey led them to New Zealand, the country Trubridge represents today when setting his incredible records. Growing up, Trubridge developed a love for the ocean, and his childhood games revolved around water. By the age of eight, he was already able to dive to a depth of 15 meters. It was later on that Trubridge discovered the sport of freediving and made a name for himself in the world of freediving.

Record-Breaking Career

Trubridge began setting his major records in 2007 when he dived to a depth of 82 meters. In 2008, he further solidified his reputation by reaching a depth of 107 meters. Watching videos of Trubridge's dives can be daunting, as he confidently and rapidly descends vertically without any scuba or equipment. However, diving 100 meters underwater is much different from being 100 meters on the surface. Trubridge's lung capacity is 8.1 liters, and he can hold his breath for up to 7.5 minutes.

In January 2011, Trubridge was awarded the World's Absolute Freediver Award, recognizing his outstanding performance in all freediving disciplines, including diving with fins, without fins, and free immersion. On April 10, 2011, he set his last record by diving to a depth of 121 meters. Overall, he has become a world record holder at least 15 times.

Vertical Blue and Training

Trubridge continues his training and has opened his own freediving school called "Vertical Blue." Under the same name, he organizes annual freediving competitions. From September to May, Trubridge resides in Long Island, Bahamas, where he trains at Dean's Blue Hole, known as the deepest known blue hole on the planet. During the summer, he trains freedivers in Europe.

Personal Life and Philosophy

Trubridge is married, and his wife is always there to support him during his dives. He describes freediving as more of a mental sport than a physical one. In addition to his diving, Trubridge spends a significant amount of time meditating, sometimes even sitting in a lotus position at the bottom of the ocean for several minutes. His life, records, and daily training were documented in the film "Breathe."
