Winston Xiao-tzu Chang: A Distinguished Academic and Educator

Winston Xiao-tzu Chang, born on March 1, 1942, in Guilin, Guangxi, China, served as the distinguished President of Soochow University in Taipei. The son of Chiang Ching-kuo and Chang Ya-juo, Winston's early life was shrouded in mystery. Given his mother's surname due to his birth outside of wedlock, he nonetheless carried the generational designation "Xiao" in his Chinese name, shared by all other children of Chiang Ching-kuo.

Early Life and Education

After the death of his mother under enigmatic circumstances, Winston and his twin brother John were raised by their maternal uncle, Chang Hau-juo, and his wife, Chi Chen, who were listed as their parents in official documents until December 2002. Fleeing to Hsinchu, Taiwan, in 1949, Winston pursued legal studies at Soochow University. He later earned his Master's degree from Southern Methodist University and a Doctorate of Law from Tulane University Law School.

Academic Career and University Leadership

Upon his return to Taiwan, Winston embarked on a career in academia. He served as a lecturer and researcher before becoming Dean of Soochow University's College of Law. In 1992, he was appointed President of the university.

Personal Life and Legacy

On August 20, 1993, Winston visited his mother's tomb in Guilin and participated in a Sino-Taiwanese Buddhist conference. In late 1994, he suffered a stroke in Beijing and fell into a coma. Despite remaining unconscious, he officially held the presidency of Soochow University for two more years before passing away on February 24, 1996. Winston is survived by his son, Ching-sung, and daughter, Yu-chu, from his marriage to Chao Chung-te.
