Wojciech Kętrzyński: Renowned Polish Historian and Activist
Early Life and EducationWojciech Kętrzyński was born into a Germanized Kashubian family. His father adopted the surname von Winkler in 1821. Despite his German upbringing, Kętrzyński later embraced his Polish national identity and reverted to his ancestral surname.
Polish Activism in Prussia
As a student at the University of Adalbert von Winkler, Kętrzyński became involved in the Polish movement in Prussia's Mazuria region. He played an active role in promoting Polish culture and identity.
Move to Austria-Hungary and Career in Scholarship
Kętrzyński relocated to Austria-Hungary and became the director of the prestigious Ossolineum Institute in Lviv. He authored several notable works, including "Die Sygier" (1868), "Nazwy miejscowe Prus zachodnich, wschodnich i Pomorza" (1879), and "Katalog rękopisów bibljoteki Ossolińskich" (1881-1886).
Legacy and Honors
After World War II, the town of Rastenburg in former East Prussia was renamed Kętrzyn in his honor (1946). Kętrzyński's remains were laid to rest in the Lychakiv Cemetery in Lviv. His contributions to Polish history and activism continue to be commemorated and celebrated.
