Hamza Abdi Barre: A Journey to Premiership

Early Life and Education

Hamza Abdi Barre was born in 1972 or 1973 in Kismayo, Lower Jubba. He received his primary education in Somalia before pursuing higher education abroad. In 2001, Barre graduated from Yemen's University of Science and Technology with a bachelor's degree.

Professional Career

From 2003 to 2004, Barre served as the executive director of Formal Private Education Network Somalia (FPENS) in Mogadishu. In 2005, he co-founded Kismayo University. He later obtained a master's degree from Malaysia's International Islamic University Malaysia in 2009.

Barre spent several years as an educator in Kismayo and Mogadishu, eventually becoming a senior lecturer at the University of Mogadishu.

Political Career

Barre has been a long-time supporter of the Union for Peace and Development party, holding various positions within the party and the federal government. From 2014 to 2015, Barre served as the administrative adviser to the governor of Banadir region and later the mayor of Mogadishu, Hassan Mohamed Hussein. He also worked as a senior adviser in the Ministry of Constitutional Affairs and Federalism.

Between 2011 and 2017, Barre held the post of general secretary for the Peace and Development Party. From 2019 to 2020, he served as the chairman of the Jubbaland Electoral Commission.

Appointment as Prime Minister

On December 28, 2021, Barre was elected to the lower house of Somalia's federal parliament, representing the Afmadow constituency of Middle Jubba. On June 15, 2022, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud appointed Barre as Prime Minister of Somalia, replacing Mohamed Hussein Roble. On June 25, parliament unanimously endorsed Barre's candidacy. He was tasked with forming a cabinet within a month.
