Early Life and Education
Konstantin Aleksandrovich Kocheshkov was born on December 12, 1894, in Moscow, Russia. In 1921, he graduated from the Chemistry Department of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at Moscow State University. He continued his studies as a postgraduate student in the laboratory of N.D. Zelinsky.
Academic Career
In 1934, Kocheshkov became a professor at the Department of Organic Chemistry at Moscow State University. In collaboration with A.N. Nesmeyanov, he developed a new lecture course on "Chemistry of Organoelement Compounds," which he taught for several years.
In 1935, he obtained the degree of Doctor of Science (without defending a dissertation) and was elected professor of the Department of Organic Chemistry. In 1944, he became head of the Laboratory of the Chemistry of Organoelement Compounds at the Department of Organic Chemistry at Moscow State University. From 1937, he led a laboratory at the All-Union Institute of Experimental Medicine named after M. Gorky.
Contributions to Organometallic Chemistry
Kocheshkov is known for his groundbreaking contributions to organometallic chemistry. He developed several new directions in the field, including the use of alkali metal organic compounds for the synthesis of organometallic compounds. His research was highly theoretical and practical, as several reactions known as "Kocheshkov reactions" are widely used in the synthesis of various organometallic compounds.
Mentorship and Collaborations
Kocheshkov mentored generations of Soviet scientists. He was one of the initiators and responsible editors of the multi-volume monograph series "Methods of Organoelement Chemistry," unique in world literature. He collaborated with numerous renowned scientists, including T.V. Talalayava, V.A. Zasosov, and N.I. Sheverdina.
Honors and Recognition
Kocheshkov received numerous honors and awards, including the title of Hero of Socialist Labor, three Orders of Lenin, and the Stalin Prize (1948) and State Prize of the USSR (1967). In 1946, he was elected a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and in 1968, he became a Full Member.
