Early Life and Education
Born in Warsaw, Poland, on May 15, 1904, to a working-class family, the Russian cinematographer and photojournalist embarked on his artistic journey. In 1932, he graduated from the All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK).
Cinematography Career
His professional path led him to work as a cinematographer for Belgoskino and Mosfilm studios. During the Great Patriotic War, he served as a frontline cinematographer for the Central Documentary Film Studio, capturing the combat operations of the Black Sea Fleet, the Azov Flotilla, and the Danube Flotilla.
Post-War Career and Challenges
In 1948, he was dismissed from his position, allegedly due to anti-Semitism. Despite his contributions during the war, the post-war climate resulted in a purge of Jewish professionals from the film industry. Undeterred, he continued his artistic endeavors as a photojournalist for the APN agency.
Recognition and Awards
Throughout his career, he was recognized for his exceptional work. He received the Order of the Patriotic War, 1st degree (1944) and the Order of the Red Star (1942) for his significant contributions to wartime cinematography.
