Early Life and Education
Alexander Dovzhenko was born in Sosnytsia, Ukraine, in 1894. He attended school in Tambov, Russia, where he completed his studies at the real gymnasium.
Military Service
During the Russian Civil War, Dovzhenko served as a political commissar in the Red Army from 1918 to 1920. He held various positions, including Commissar of the 14th Cavalry Division of the 1st Cavalry Army and Commissar of the 19th Cavalry Regiment of the 4th Cavalry Division.
Entry into Cinematography
In 1924, Dovzhenko transitioned to filmmaking. He served as the director of the state film factory Goskino and, later, the Odessa Film Studio (in the 1930s) and the Sverdlovsk Film Studio (in the 1940s).
