Early Life and Evacuation
Jacob Lipkinwas born to literary parents: his father, Semyon Lipkin, and his mother, Nina Kulikova. During World War II, Jacob, his sister, and mother were evacuated to Chistopol. While there, they met Zinaida Neigauz, Boris Pasternak's second wife, who became fond of Jacob.
Return to Moscow and Father's Influence
In 1943, Jacob returned to Moscow with his family. His father's presence played a significant role in his life, exposing him to literature, poetry, and natural sciences. At age eight, Jacob began writing poetry, showcasing his early talent.
Education and Military Service
Jacob completed high school in 1957 and pursued physics and mathematics at Kabardino-Balkar State University. In 1960, he returned to Moscow and worked at a research institute before enrolling in Moscow State University. However, his studies were interrupted by military service, where he served as a guard in northern Ural.
Army Poems and Literary Admiration
During his time in the army, Jacob continued to write poems, including those on sensitive "camp" themes. His father showcased these poems to Anna Akhmatova and Vasily Grossman, who praised their quality. Akhmatova even selected and included two of Jacob's poems in his army poetry collection "Kolva" (2021).
Return to Civilian Life and Literary Apprenticeship
After his discharge in 1964, Jacob resumed his studies at Moscow State University. He also worked at the Central Research Institute of Computer Technology. In 2020-2022, Jacob penned memoirs about his interactions with literary figures whom his father had associated with throughout his life.
Published Works and Son's Literary Legacy
In 2021, Jacob Lipkin published his first book of poetry, "Kolva," under the pseudonym Y. Kulik. He also wrote the philosophical work "On Cosmos and God" and penned memories of his unsettling neighbor, Ivan Smagin.
Throughout his life, Jacob Lipkin has bridged the worlds of mathematics, literature, philosophy, and art, carrying on the literary legacy of his father and contributing his own unique perspectives to a diverse body of cultural and intellectual work.
