Biography of Yakov Manandyan

Yakov Manandyan was a renowned Armenian historian and academic, known for his significant contributions to the study of ancient and medieval Armenia. He was born on November 10, 1873, in Akhaltsikhe (now Georgia). Manandyan completed his studies at the Philology Department of the University of Jena in 1897. The following year, he successfully completed an external course at the Oriental Faculty of St. Petersburg University.

In 1926, Manandyan became a professor at Yerevan University, where he taught ancient Armenian history. Throughout his career, he played a crucial role in developing the understanding of the socio-economic structure of ancient and medieval Armenia. He conducted extensive research in the fields of philology, metrology, and historical geography.

One of Manandyan's most significant works is the "Critical Review of the History of the Armenian People" (volumes 1-3, 1945-57). This comprehensive work delves into various aspects of Armenian history, providing valuable insights into the nation's past. Manandyan's meticulous research and scholarly approach have made this work a foundational resource for the study of Armenian history.

In recognition of his contributions, Yakov Manandyan was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor. He passed away on February 4, 1952, in Yerevan, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the field of Armenian history.
