Early Life and Education

Born in Zhitomir, Ukraine, into a family of a bookkeeper, the subject first worked as an engraver at a factory from the age of 16. In February 1917, he joined the Jewish social-democratic party "Poalei Zion." He spent his youth in various military and educational roles, including:

1918: Fighter in the Red Guard detachment in Zhitomir

1919: Private in a rifle regiment on the Southern Front
1919-1920: Cadet at the Military Engineering School in Samara
1922-1923: Studied at the Military-Pedagogical School in Kiev
Early Career in the Cheka

In November 1919, he became an assistant commissioner for the fight against banditry in the Samara Provincial Cheka. He held various positions in the Cheka, including:

1921: Political instructor of the Novograd-Volynsky food detachment

1921: Head of the department for the fight against banditry in the district Cheka

1922: Political instructor of a sapper company in Bila Tserkva

Career in the OGPU

In the spring of 1923, he transitioned to full-time work in the Cheka. He served in various positions within the OGPU, including:

Assistant commissioner of the Vologda Provincial Department of the OGPU

Commissioner of the Shepetivka District Department

Employee of the central apparatus of the GPU of the Ukrainian SSR
Head of the Information Department of the GPU of the Ukrainian SSR
Career in the OGPU and NKVD

In 1928-1930, he worked in the OGPU under the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR as an assistant head, head of department, assistant head of the Information Department and political control. From March 1930 to August 1931, he was the head of the Information and Secret-Political Department of the Plenipotentiary Representation of the OGPU in the Moscow Region.

From 1932 onwards, he served in the organs of the OGPU-NKVD in the Far Eastern Krai, including:

Head of the Special Departments of the Transbaikal and Primorsky Groups of Troops of the Special Red Banner Far Eastern Army

Head of the Primorsky Oblast Department of the GPU-UNKVD and concurrently of the Special Department of the Maritime Forces of the Far East

Arrest and Death

In August 1937, he was arrested and died during the investigation after ingesting poison he had previously hidden.
