Blessed Józef Stanek: A Life of Faith and Martyrdom
Józef Stanek was a renowned Roman Catholic priest, monk, and martyr.Early Life and Education
Born on March 14, 1918, in Vilnius, Lithuania, Józef was the sole child in his family. He was baptized in the Church of the Holy Spirit. At the age of seven, he began his elementary education, later attending Lelewel Royal High School and A. Mickiewicz Classical High School.
Discerning His Vocation
Despite objections from his family, Józef resolved to become a priest. On June 16, 1933, he graduated from high school and embarked on his journey towards ordination.
Ordination and Ministry
In May 1939, Józef was ordained as a priest. He became a close collaborator of Saint Maximilian Kolbe, a notable Polish monk.
Martyrdom in Auschwitz
On February 17, 1941, Józef was apprehended by the Gestapo and deported to Auschwitz concentration camp. Enduring unimaginable suffering, he contracted typhus and succumbed to it on July 15, 1943.
Beatification
On June 13, 1999, Józef was beatified by Pope John Paul II during his visit to Warsaw. He was recognized as one of 108 Blessed Polish Martyrs who perished during World War II. His feast day is celebrated on June 12th.
