Biography of Kristupas Čibirka

Kristupas Čibirka was a Lithuanian Catholic priest, theologian, and social activist. He was born in a village near Daugeliškis (Dageliškis), Lithuania.

Education:

He completed his studies at the seminary in Vilnius in 1911 and the Catholic Spiritual Academy in St. Petersburg in 1915.

Teaching Career:

Čibirka taught at a Lithuanian gymnasium in Vilnius and Sventcianai. From 1915, he served as a vicar at the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Vilnius. Starting from 1924 until his death, he was a priest at the parish of the Church of St. Nicholas in Vilnius. He transformed the church into an important Lithuanian national, cultural, and social center.

Activism and Publications:

In 1927, Čibirka was held under arrest by Polish authorities. He served as the chairman of the educational society "Rytas" (1933-1938) and Vice Chairman of the Temporary Lithuanian Committee in Vilnius. He actively participated in the press and published and edited newspapers such as "Vilniaus garsas" (1920-1921) and "Nasza Ziemia." Additionally, he authored several theological books, including "Doros objektyvumas" (1919), "Dogmatika" (1922), and "Liturgika" (1922, reprinted in 1947 in Germany).

Death and Burial:

Čibirka tragically perished under the rubble of a house during a bombardment by Soviet aviation in Vilnius. He was laid to rest at the Rasos Cemetery, possibly near the grave of Jonas Basanavičius.
