Early Life and Career
Jan Koller was born into a family of farmers in Smetanova Lhota, Czechoslovakia. As a child, he excelled in basketball and was advised to pursue it professionally. However, his passion lay in football. Despite his towering height, which was initially seen as a disadvantage, Koller persisted with his dream.
Transfer to Anderlecht
In 1998, after failing to break into the first team at Sparta Prague, Koller was sold to the Belgian club Lokeren. He made an immediate impact, scoring 24 goals in the 1998/99 season, earning him a move to Anderlecht. In Brussels, Koller continued his prolific form, scoring 20 goals in 33 matches.
International Success
Koller's impressive performances at club level earned him a call-up to the Czech Republic national team. He made his debut in a friendly against Belgium in 1999, scoring in a 2-1 victory. Koller went on to become a regular in the Czech team, scoring 14 goals in his first 14 appearances.
Euro 2000 Disappointment
Koller played a key role in the Czech Republic's impressive qualifying campaign for Euro 2000. However, the tournament itself proved to be a disappointment for the team. Koller scored in the opening match against the Netherlands, but penalties and poor luck led to defeats in their next two matches.
