Biography of Yan Tabachnik
Yan Tabachnik is a Soviet and Ukrainian pop composer, virtuoso accordionist, politician, and entrepreneur. He was born on July 31, 1945, in Chernivtsi, in a Jewish family. His father, Pyotr Borisovich Tabachnik (1910-1981), was a textile engineer, and his mother, Hanna Israelovna Tabachnik (1912-1981).
Early Life and Musical Career
Tabachnik graduated from the Melitopol State Pedagogical Institute, majoring in music and singing. He started his career in popular music at the age of sixteen. From 1964 to 1966, he was an artist at the Astrakhan Regional Philharmonic and worked in the pop orchestras of the Tbilisi Philharmonic and the Philharmonic of the Southern Coast of Crimea (1967-1968). He also performed in Chernivtsi and Adjara. From 1973 to 1994, he served as the musical director of Ukrainian folk music ensembles, "Surmi" and "Novy Den," in Zaporizhia.
Later Career and Accolades
In 1995, Tabachnik became the director of the Odessa Municipal Music Theater. He relocated to Kyiv in 2000. He is also the organizer of the annual international accordionists' competition, AccoHoliday, in Kyiv.
Tabachnik has been an influential figure in Ukrainian politics. He served as a member of the Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian Parliament, in the fifth and sixth convocations. He was a member of the Party of Regions.
Tabachnik has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to music and society. He was awarded the title of People's Artist of Ukraine in 1994. He has also been honored with the Order "For Merit" of the 3rd, 2nd, and 1st degrees. In 2010, he received the Presidential Order "Radiance" from Georgia, and in 2011, he was awarded the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, 5th class.
Despite being a renowned composer and musician, Tabachnik's career has been intertwined with his involvement in politics and entrepreneurship, making him a multi-faceted personality in Ukrainian society.
