Early Life and Education
Born in Armenia, the Soviet composer Khachatur Avetisyan spent his early years as a performer on the qanon, an ancient stringed instrument. In 1942, he joined an ensemble as a qanon player and musical director.
Musical Journey
In 1950, Avetisyan began teaching qanon at the Yerevan Music College. He later became the musical director of the State Dance Ensemble of Armenia from 1958 to 1972. Concurrently, he pursued his formal music education, graduating from the Yerevan Conservatory in 1961 and completing his composition studies with Edvard Mirzoyan.
Teaching and Artistic Leadership
From 1974 to 1977, Avetisyan served as the musical director of the T. Altunyan Song and Dance Ensemble. In 1977, he joined the faculty of the Yerevan Conservatory as a lecturer, eventually becoming the Head of the Department of Folk Instruments in 1978.
