Jan Zaberezhinsky: A Prominent Figure in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania
Early Life and InheritancesJan Zaberezhinsky was a prominent statesman in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, born to Prince Yuri Rimovich Zaberezhinsky. He inherited substantial wealth and estates from his relatives, including Pyotr Gedigoldovich, the deceased governor of Smolensk and castellan of Vilnius. Through marriage to Anna Nosuta, he acquired further properties in various counties, making him one of the wealthiest magnates in Lithuania.
Rise to Power
Zaberezhinsky held numerous high-ranking positions in the Grand Duchy. He served as Court Marshal (1482-1496), Governor of Polotsk (1484-1496), Castellan of Trakai (1492-1498), and finally, Voivode of Trakai (1498-1505). His appointment as Grand Marshal of Lithuania (1498-1505) signified his prominence among the Lithuanian nobility.
Diplomatic Mission and Conflict with Glinsky
In 1495, Zaberezhinsky was tasked with leading a delegation as an ambassador to Grand Prince Ivan III of Moscow to negotiate a marriage alliance between Grand Duke Alexander Casimir Jagiellon of Lithuania and Princess Elena Ivanovna. However, he later became a vocal opponent of Prince Mikhail Lvovich Glinsky, the favorite of Alexander Casimir. In 1505, Glinsky filed a complaint against Zaberezhinsky, leading to his removal as Voivode of Trakai.
Assassination and Legacy
In 1508, Glinsky and his brothers incited a rebellion to avenge their loss of power. On February 2, Jan Zaberezhinsky was assassinated at his estate near Grodno on Glinsky's orders. His untimely demise left a significant void in the political landscape of the Grand Duchy.
Family
Zaberezhinsky was married to Anna Nosuta and had four children: Stanisław, Jan, Yuri, and Jadwiga. His descendants played a significant role in the history of Lithuania and Poland for generations to come.
