Early Life and Education
Yana Duhar was born in Poltava region, Ukraine (unconfirmed sources suggest Dnipropetrovsk region). She received her medical training at the Litvinenko Kharkiv Medical College.
Military Service
Following the outbreak of the Russo-Ukrainian War, Duhar volunteered for the front and served as an operating medical nurse and later as a surgical nurse in military mobile hospital No. 66. On May 22, 2018, she was transferred to the Airborne Assault Forces, joining the 25th Air Assault Brigade as a junior sergeant. She later earned the rank of sergeant and became a senior combat medic.
Arrest and Suspicion in Journalist's Murder
On December 12, 2019, Duhar was arrested on suspicion of organizing the assassination of Ukrainian journalist Pavel Sheremet. Police alleged that she possessed weapons and conducted surveillance in preparation for the crime. Other suspects in the case included Yulia Kuzmenko and Andriy Antonenko.
Home Arrest and Trial
Duhar was initially placed under house arrest by a controversial judge, Sergey Vovk. On January 24, her house arrest was amended to night-time only, requiring her to remain in a military unit in Hvardiyske, Dnipropetrovsk, from 8:00 PM to 7:00 AM while wearing an electronic bracelet. In May 2020, it was proposed that Duhar's house arrest be replaced with bail.
Removal of Restrictions and Continued Trial
On July 13, Duhar was granted permission to remove her electronic bracelet and move freely within Ukraine. Subsequently, on July 17, some restrictions on her communication with military personnel were lifted.
