Early Life and Military Service

Janīss Ādamsons was born on November 3, 1956, in the Preiļi district of Latvia. He graduated from the Kiev Higher Naval School in 1979 as a navigator and submarine officer. Subsequently, he served in the border guards in the Far East, earning the nickname "Shark" for his efforts against Japanese poachers.

Political Career

Ādamsons entered politics as a member of the "Latvian Way" party. He served as a deputy in the 6th and 7th Saeimas (Latvian Parliament) and was appointed Minister of Internal Affairs from November 1994 to 1995. Later, he became the deputy chairman of the Latvian Social Democratic Workers' Party (LSDSP) and eventually joined the Harmony Center.

Scandalous Investigations and Controversy

As a deputy, Ādamsons gained notoriety for investigating high-profile scandals involving top Latvian officials. Notably, Prime Minister Andris Šķēle resigned after Ādamsons accused him, Minister of Justice Valdis Birkavs, and State Revenue Service head Andrejs Sončiks of pedophilia. However, the accusations were never proven, and in 2006, Ādamsons was sentenced to pay a fine of 11,700 lats (approximately 15,000 euros).

Accusations and Legal Challenges

Due to a law prohibiting former KGB officers, which included border guards, from running for the Saeima, Ādamsons was no longer eligible for election after 2002. Additionally, he has faced ongoing accusations of collaborating with Russian state security agencies.
