Janis Semenov: Musical Prodigy and Drummer Extraordinaire

Janis Semenov, a renowned musician, drummer, and percussionist, has made a significant impact in the Russian rock scene. His journey in music began at a tender age, fueled by a supportive family and exceptional mentors.

Early Musical Beginnings

Born into a musical family, Janis was immersed in music from the cradle. His father, Igor Semenov, was the leader of the bands "Prisutstvie" and "Rock-shtat." Inspired by his father's passion, Janis started playing the drums at the age of 4.

At age 6, he enrolled in a music school in Lomonosov, specializing in drums. However, disagreements with his piano teacher led him to drop out after a year and a half.

Self-Education and Mentorship

Undeterred, Janis's musical education continued outside traditional institutions. Seasoned musicians such as Alexander Voronov ("Dusser" from Tequilajazzz), Igor Tikhomirov (bass guitarist for the band Kino), Yuri Shcherbakov ("Rock-shtat"), and Boris Shaveynikov (drummer for Auktsyon) became his mentors.

International Exposure and Collaborations

From age 8 to 11, Janis lived in Paris with his parents. There, he honed his skills on the drums and developed his vocal abilities by accompanying his father at concerts. He also had the opportunity to meet renowned musicians like Robert Plant and bands like Aerosmith and Poison.

Debut with "Rock-shtat" and "JET"

Janis's professional debut as a drummer came with the popular band "Rock-shtat." His talent was quickly recognized by fellow musicians such as "Dusser" from Tequilajazzz and "Doc" from DDT. Subsequently, bassist Konstantin Kokorin, who was also a member of the band "Bely Angel," joined "Rock-shtat."

In 1996, Kokorin and Janis formed the band "JET." They played numerous club concerts, including one where Janis encountered the band Torba-na-Kruche. The encounter ignited a friendship that continues to this day.

Joining Torba-na-Kruche

In August 2003, Torba-na-Kruche invited Janis Semenov to record the drums for their second album. His exceptional performance earned him a permanent place in the band that fall. Since then, he has been an integral member of the collective, contributing his rhythmic brilliance to their acclaimed music.
