Early Life and Education
John Pappa was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Greek parents Chris and Anna Papas. His paternal grandparents hailed from the island of Imbros (present-day Turkey), while his maternal grandmother was from Crete, Greece. Pappa's grandfather, like many Greek immigrants, worked in the restaurant business. He has two older brothers, Peter and Nikos. His brother Peter is a lawyer who served in the Clinton and Obama administrations.
As a child, Pappa attended Orthodox church and served as an altar boy. He graduated from American University, majoring in American Studies and History.
Community Involvement and Professional Beginnings
Pappa has a history of community service. He provided humanitarian aid to victims of the 9/11 attacks, worked with individuals with mental illness, and volunteered with Lutheran Social Service. In the media, he hosted the comedy show "2 Point Lead" and co-anchored "Fusion Live" with journalists Mariana Atencio and Pedro Andrade, a show covering current events, pop culture, and satire. He also co-hosted "The Bracket" with comedian Chris Distefano.
Stand-Up Comedy and YouTube Success
In recent years, Pappa has gained popularity in the Greek-American community for his YouTube characters Maurice and Mr. Panos. These characters have resonated with Greek audiences, providing comedic insights into Greek culture and traditions.
Production Company and Filmmaking
Beyond stand-up comedy, Pappa has co-founded the production company Ditch Films with his friend, filmmaker Jesse Scaturro. Together, they have produced several short films and videos.
