Early Life and Education

Jason of Pherae, the son of Lycophron, was born in the late 5th century BCE. As a young man, he received a sophisticated education, studying under renowned teachers like Gorgias.

Rise to Power

Upon the death of his father and a brief reign by his older brother, Polyalkes, Jason seized power in Pherae in the late 80s BCE. With an army of 6,000 mercenaries, he subdued neighboring tribes and forced an alliance with the Epirote king Alcetas. Soon, all the Thessalian cities acknowledged his authority.

Military Prowess and Political Ambitions

In 375 BCE, Jason was proclaimed tagus (chieftain) of Thessaly. Under his command, he assembled a formidable army of 8,000 cavalry, 20,000 hoplites, and numerous light-armed warriors. Aspiring to build a powerful navy, he planned to conquer Macedonia for its valuable timber.

Despite maintaining friendly ties with Sparta and Thebes, Jason feared their growing power. He prevented a Spartan victory at the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BCE and later ravaged Phocis and captured Heraclea Trachinia.

Plans for Persia

Inspired by Isocrates, Jason envisioned an audacious expedition against Persia. He believed that conquering the vast empire would be easier than uniting Greece.

Assassination and Legacy

In 370 BCE, Jason organized the Pythian Festival in Delphi. However, fears that he intended to seize the temple's treasury led to his assassination by a group of conspirators. His brothers, Polydorus and Polyphron, succeeded him as tagus.

Xenophon's Assessment

According to the historian Xenophon, Jason was a skilled strategist, relentless warrior, and tireless commander. He rigorously trained his mercenaries, rewarding their efforts with privileges and bonuses. Jason's exceptional strength and endurance made him a formidable figure in battle.
