Early Life and Education
Yoshikuni Iida, a Japanese abstract artist and sculptor, was born in 1923 in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. He pursued higher education at Keio University, studying aesthetics and art history from 1946 to 1949. Subsequently, he enrolled in the Tokyo University of the Arts, where he honed his abilities in painting under the tutelage of Umehаro Ryūsaburо from 1949 to 1953.
Artistic Journey
In 1953, Iida joined the Musanakodji Saneastu Atarashi mura (New Village Society), an artistic collective. He embarked on his renowned "Night Worlds" series in 1954 and collaborated with the Society of Eight.
Iida's pursuit of excellence led him to Europe in 1956, where he studied under the renowned sculptor Pericle Fazzini in Rome. He then relocated to Vienna, where he delved into the art of copperplate engraving and oil painting from 1957 to 1963. During this time, he was invited by Karl Prantl to participate in the European Sculptors' Symposium in Sankt Margarethen.
International Recognition
Iida's presence on the international art scene was established through his participation in the Form Viva exhibition in Yugoslavia in 1963. He spent the following years in Berlin, Germany, where he focused on sculptural works. In 1964, he joined the European Sculptors' Symposium in Berlin.
Return to Japan and Later Career
Returning to his native Japan in 1967, Iida organized the International Iron and Steel Symposium in Osaka in 1968. He also expanded his artistic repertoire to include poetry, publishing his first collection, "Nancy's Armor", in 1978. Iida's work was celebrated in 1987 with the presentation of the collection "Iida Yoshikuni - Morning in Motion".
Yoshikuni Iida passed away in Machida, Tokyo, and his artistic legacy continues to inspire and captivate audiences worldwide.
