Early Career: From Puppet Theatre to Animation

Born into a family of artists, Julian Abramovich Kalisher initially pursued puppet theatre. However, his path took an unexpected turn when the Ekran animation studio conceived the idea of filming stage performances. These productions provided Kalisher with his first exposure to the art of filmmaking.

Breakthrough: "The Wizard of the Emerald City"

Kalisher's debut as an animation director came with the 10-episode puppet animation "The Wizard of the Emerald City," adapted from Alexander Volkov's novel. Collaborating with artist Yuri Trofimov, Kalisher gained invaluable experience in stop-motion animation.

Artistic Collaboration and Acclaim

Building on his success, Kalisher directed the full-length puppet film "Holiday of Disobedience," based on Sergei Mikhalkov's book. This project brought together a talented team, including artist Valery Dmitruk, composer Alexei Rybnikov, and poet Alexander Timofeevsky.
