Yurii Bokarev: Prolific Ukrainian Energy Leader
Early Life and EducationYurii Bokarev was born on September 2, 1938, in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia. His father, Georgiy Filippovich Bokarev, was a military officer, while his mother, Maria Mikhailovna, was a homemaker. Bokarev grew up in Belarus and attended Feodosia High School No. 2. After graduating, he worked as a turner at the Feodosia Mechanical Plant.
Driven by a thirst for higher education, Bokarev pursued an engineering degree at the Lviv Polytechnic Institute, graduating in 1962 with a specialization in electrical engineering.
Career in Zaporozhye
In 1962, Bokarev moved to Zaporozhye, his wife's hometown. He began his professional journey as a foreman at the Zaporozhye City Power Grids Enterprise. Within a year, he became the chief engineer, and in 1973, he was appointed director of the enterprise. During his tenure, he initiated significant structural reforms.
From 1981, Bokarev held various leadership positions within the city government: deputy chairman (1981-1988), first deputy chairman (1988-1990), and chairman (1990-1992). He also served as the chairman of the Zaporozhye City Council from 1991-1992.
Leadership in Ukrainian Energy Sector
In 1994, Bokarev played a key role in the creation of Dniproenergo, a state-owned energy company. He held several positions within the company, including first deputy general director and member of the board.
In 1996, Bokarev was appointed Minister of Energy and Electrification in the government of Pavlo Lazarenko. He served in this capacity until 1997, where he played a pivotal role in drafting the Ukrainian Law on Electricity and initiating the establishment of an energy market.
Return to Dniproenergo
In 2000, Bokarev returned to Dniproenergo as a member of the board. He subsequently served as general director from February 2005 and chairman of the board from November 2007 to April 2010.
Under his leadership, Dniproenergo implemented a major investment program, bringing Unit 10 of Krivorozhskaya Thermal Power Station back into operation, providing an additional 300 MW of electricity to Ukraine's energy grid.

Personal Life and Recognition
Yurii Bokarev passed away on June 21, 2011, at the age of 72. He was survived by his wife, Margarita, daughter, Alexandra, and granddaughter, Alexandra Sidorova, a champion sports dancer.
For his contributions to the energy sector and the city of Zaporozhye, Bokarev received numerous awards and honors, including:
