John Bryson: A Multifaceted Career in Economics, Law, and Public Service

Early Life and Education
John Bryson is an American economist, lawyer, and politician who served as the 37th United States Secretary of Commerce. He graduated from Yale Law School in 1965, Stanford University with a bachelor's degree in 1969, and Yale Law School with a Juris Doctor degree in 1970.

Environmental Advocacy and Utility Regulation
In 1970, Bryson co-founded the Natural Resources Defense Council's legal defense group. From 1976 to 1979, he chaired the California State Water Resources Control Board. Subsequently, he served as president of the California Public Utilities Commission from 1979 to 1982.

Corporate Leadership and Non-Profit Involvement
Bryson held various executive positions at Edison International, including director from 1984 to 2008. He also served on the boards of The Boeing Company, the W. M. Keck Foundation, and The Walt Disney Company. Additionally, he has served as a trustee for several educational, environmental, and non-profit organizations.
Secretary of Commerce and Controversy
On May 31, 2011, Barack Obama nominated Bryson to succeed Gary Locke as Secretary of Commerce. His appointment was temporarily delayed by Republican Senator James Inhofe due to Bryson's pro-environmental stance. Bryson was eventually confirmed on October 20, 2011, with a vote of 74-26. He took office the following day. As Secretary of Commerce, Bryson served on the White House Office of Manufacturing Policy alongside Gene Sperling.
Automobile Accidents and Resignation
On June 9, 2012, Bryson was involved in two car accidents in San Gabriel and Rosemead, California. He was reportedly found unconscious at the scene of the second crash. The Department of Commerce confirmed the incident and stated that Bryson had suffered a seizure. Full details of the accidents were not released, but he was suspected of hit-and-run. However, no charges were filed against him. Bryson took a leave of absence due to health concerns on June 11. He resigned on June 21, 2012, with his deputy, Rebecca Blank, taking over as Secretary of Commerce. Bryson cited health issues and expressed concerns about his ability to effectively fulfill his duties. Obama praised Bryson's service in both government and the private sector.
