Yuriy Dold-Mykhailik: Versatile Ukrainian Writer and Filmmaker
Born in Ukraine, Yuriy Dold-Mykhailik (1895-1966) was a prolific writer, dramatist, critic, and publicist who made significant contributions to Ukrainian literature and cinema.
Early Life and Education
After graduating from the Dnipropetrovsk Institute of Public Education, Dold-Mykhailik embarked on a diverse career in the cultural sphere.
Journalism and Publishing
Dold-Mykhailik worked as a librarian, journalist, and director of a children's colony before joining the newspaper industry. He served as editor-in-chief of various newspapers in Херсон and Vinnytsia.
Film Career
In 1934, Dold-Mykhailik became the chief editor of the Ukrainian Film Chronicle Studio. Later, he led the "Kinoletopis" film project and served as the chief editor of the Kyiv Film Studio from 1937 to 1942.
Later Years
After the war, Dold-Mykhailik worked for the newspaper "Radianska Ukraina" and in publishing. He also held leadership positions in the theater industry.
Literary Success
Dold-Mykhailik began publishing in 1922 and gained fame with his adventure novel, "I odin u poli voyin" (And One Warrior in the Field, 1956). Translated into numerous foreign languages, this novel depicted the heroism of Soviet intelligence agents in Nazi-occupied territory during World War II. It was adapted into the film "Vdali vid Batkivshchiny" with a screenplay written by Dold-Mykhailik himself.
Death and Legacy
Yuriy Dold-Mykhailik passed away on May 17, 1966, and is buried in Kyiv's Baikove Cemetery. A memorial plaque was unveiled in 1968 on the house where he lived and worked from 1952 to 1966.
Dold-Mykhailik remains an important figure in Ukrainian literature, renowned for his diverse and influential contributions to fiction, filmmaking, and cultural criticism.
