Ukranian Fighter in the Spanish Civil War
Yuriy Velykanovych (also known as Yuriko Velykanovych) was an active participant in both the Spanish Civil War and the political scene of Western Ukraine. A staunch member of the Communist Party of Western Ukraine, Velykanovych dedicated his life to fighting for social justice and against fascism.
From Ukraine to Spain: A Soldier in the International Brigades
In the summer of 1936, Velykanovych traveled to Spain to join the International Brigades, a group of volunteers from around the world who fought against the fascist forces of Francisco Franco. He served in the Taras Shevchenko Company, a unit named after the famous Ukrainian poet.
A Ukrainian Voice in the International Brigades
Velykanovych played a significant role within the International Brigades, not only as a soldier but also as a writer and activist. He contributed articles and dispatches in Polish, Spanish, and Ukrainian to the publications of the Brigades, sharing his experiences and promoting the cause of the Spanish people.
Tragic End at the Battle of the Ebro
On September 4, 1938, Velykanovych was fighting in the Battle of the Ebro when he sustained fatal injuries. He died heroically in the defense of liberty and justice.
Legacy and Memory
Velykanovych's memory is honored in his home city of Lviv, Ukraine. During the Soviet era, a monument was erected in his honor, and a street was named after him. Although the street was renamed after Ukraine's independence in 1991, Velykanovych's legacy as a fighter against fascism and a champion of Ukrainian culture continues to inspire to this day.
