Vladimir Nikolaevich Agte: A Revolutionary and Statesman

Early Life and Education

Vladimir Nikolaevich Agte was born into a family of lawyers and received an exceptional education, graduating from Kursk Real School in 1899 and St. Petersburg Forest Institute in 1913.

Revolutionary Activism

Agte joined the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (RSDLP) in 1902. His revolutionary activities led to arrests in 1905-1906 for suspected involvement in a revolutionary organization and his support for peasant and teacher uprisings.

Revolution in Lipetsk

In 1917, Agte relocated to Lipetsk, where he served as an assistant forester and teacher at the Romanovskaya Forest School until December. On December 16, 1917, he was elected Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Lipetsk District Soviet.

As Chairman, Agte actively participated in the establishment of the Lipetsk Soviet, including the publication of its first newspaper, "Izvestiya Lipetskogo Uyezdnogo Soveta." From February to May 1918, he served as Commissioner of the Department of Land Management.

Leadership in Lipetsk

In May 1918, Agte became a member of the District Council of National Economy. In July, the 2nd Lipetsk Combined Congress of Soviets appointed him Chairman of the Economic Council. He later headed the Lipetsk District Committee of the Russian Communist Party (Bolsheviks) (RKP(b)).

Later Career

From 1921 to 1924, Agte worked in education and management in Moscow. In 1924, he became Deputy Director of the State Nikitsky Botanical Garden. He retired in 1929 but returned to work in the Central Forestry Administration of the USSR People's Commissariat of Forestry in 1938. Due to illness, he was released from his position in January 1940.

Legacy

Agte's role in the Russian Revolution was recognized with a monument-obelisk in Lipetsk's Revolution Square. His name is inscribed alongside those of other revolutionary figures. In 1967, a portion of Sadovaya Street in Lipetsk was renamed Agte Street in his honor.
