Biography of Yuri Mkrtumyan
Yuri Israelovich Mkrtumyan (Armenian: Յուրի Իսրայելի Մկրտումյան) was an Armenian political and statesman. He was born on January 1, 1939, in Tbilisi, Georgian SSR, and passed away on November 14, 2005, in Yerevan, Armenia. Mkrtumyan had a significant contribution to Armenian politics and governance throughout his career.
Education and Early Career
In 1962, Yuri Mkrtumyan graduated from Moscow State University named after M. V. Lomonosov. He earned a degree in historical sciences and became a candidate of historical sciences and an associate professor. Initially, he worked as a senior laboratory assistant from 1962 to 1963.
From 1963 to 1971, Mkrtumyan served as a junior research fellow at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Armenian Academy of Sciences. In 1971, he was promoted to the position of a senior lecturer and associate professor. He continued his academic career as the head of the Department of Archaeology and Ethnography at Yerevan State University from 1989 to 1994.
Political Career
During the years 1988 to 1991, Mkrtumyan was elected to the leadership of the Communist Party of Armenia's Central Committee and the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. In 1994, he became an advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia.
From 1994 to 1997, Mkrtumyan served as the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Armenia to Russia. In 1997, he became a leading research fellow at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia. In 1998, Mkrtumyan was honored with the title of Academician by the Armenian National Academy of Sciences.
Contributions
Throughout his career, Yuri Mkrtumyan authored 35 scientific works dedicated to the ethnography of Armenians, Caucasus peoples, interethnic relations, and cultural connections. His research shed light on various aspects of Armenian history, culture, and their relations with other ethnic groups in the Caucasus region.
