Early Life and Education

Sergei Konstantinovich Krikalev was born on August 27, 1958, in the village of Ryasnoe, Ukraine. He graduated from the Golden School No. 1 in 1978.

Military Service

In 1982, Krikalev graduated from the Yeysk Higher Military Aviation School as an engineer-pilot. He served as a pilot and senior pilot in the 229th and 209th fighter-bomber regiments of the Far Eastern Military District from 1982 to 1989.

Cosmonaut Training

In 1989, Krikalev was selected as a cosmonaut candidate and began training at the Cosmonaut Training Center. He qualified as a cosmonaut-test pilot in 1991 and received training for the Mir space station from 1991 to 1994.

First Space Flight

From February 21 to September 2, 1996, Krikalev commanded the Soyuz TM-23 mission to the Mir space station. He conducted six spacewalks totaling 30.5 hours. The mission lasted 193 days, 19 hours, and 35 seconds.

Second Space Flight

From December 5, 2001, to June 19, 2002, Krikalev commanded the fourth expedition to the International Space Station (ISS) with Carl Walz and Daniel Bursch. The mission launched on the shuttle Endeavour STS-108 and landed on Endeavour STS-111. It lasted 195 days, 19 hours, 39 minutes, and 17 seconds.

Post-Flight Career

In 2004, Krikalev became Deputy Head of the First Directorate of the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center.

Krikalev has received numerous honors and awards, including:
