Biography of Yvonne Gall
Yvonne Gall, a famous French opera soprano, was renowned for her powerful and vibrant vocal abilities, which allowed her to perform not only lyrical roles but also dramatic ones. She was born on March 6, 1885, in Paris and studied at the Conservatoire de Paris. Her debut on the professional opera stage took place in 1908 at the Paris Opéra, where she sang the role of Woglinde in the premiere production of Wagner's "Götterdämmerung," conducted by André Messager.
The Lyric Roles
Initially, Gall specialized in lyrical roles from the repertoire of French composers such as Marguerite in Charles Gounod's "Faust," Manon in Jules Massenet's "Manon," and Thaïs, also by Massenet. However, as she continued to develop her vocal technique, she expanded her repertoire to include more dramatic roles. Some of her notable additions were Tosca by Giacomo Puccini, Elsa in Wagner's "Lohengrin," and the role of Isolde in the first performance of "Tristan und Isolde" in 1923.
Opera de Monte-Carlo
Gall participated in the world premieres of several works by Romanian composer Raoul Gunsbourg at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo. Gunsbourg was an impresario and director who led the opera house for almost sixty years. Gall performed in the premieres of "Le vieil aigle" in 1909, based on a story by Maxim Gorky, "Le Cantique des Cantiques" in 1922, and "Lysistrata" in 1923.
International Success
Gall also achieved success abroad, performing in Buenos Aires and Chicago. In Chicago, she sang in the American premiere of Maurice Ravel's comic opera "L'heure espagnole." The role of Tosca marked her appearance at Milan's La Scala, and she had a single performance at Covent Garden in 1924. English music critic and scholar Ernest Newman noted that Gall presented three different interpretations of Tosca, one for each act, showcasing her exceptional acting skills.
Later Years and Legacy
One of Gall's final roles was as Phoebe in Jean-Philippe Rameau's opera "Castor et Pollux" in 1936 at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, an annual opera festival in Florence. Today, her vibrant and distinctly French soprano can be heard on numerous recordings, including one of the first complete opera recordings of Charles Gounod's "Roméo et Juliette" made in 1912 by Pathé. Yvonne Gall passed away on August 21, 1972, in Paris at the age of 87. She was married to conductor and composer Henri Büsser.
