Biography of a Distinguished Polish Philosopher and Historian of Religion
Early Life and Education
Born on July 24, 1951, in Lidzbark Warmiński, Poland, to a working-class family, the subject of this biography is a renowned philosopher, historian of religion, and essayist. He attended Kazimierz Jagiellończyk High School from 1965 to 1969.
In 1969, he enrolled at the University of Warsaw's Faculty of History (philosophy faculties were closed in state universities after the student protests of 1968). Graduating with honors in 1974, his master's thesis focused on Polish Baroque graphics and illumination.
Academic Career
After graduating, he held various positions, including museum curator, librarian, and teacher. In 1986, he earned his Ph.D. from the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, with a dissertation on Catholic philosophy of culture in Poland during the modernist period. In 1998, he obtained his habilitation degree with a study on integral traditionalism.
Currently, he is the head of the Division of Religious Studies at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. He also holds the position of professor of philosophy and classical logic at the Warsaw University of Technology's School of Applied Informatics and Management.
Research Interests
His research interests primarily lie in the philosophical and religious aspects of death and violence, early Christianity, heterodoxy, neo-paganism, and far-right and conservative thought. He has published over 800 texts, including books, monographs, scientific articles, essays, and reviews, in various languages such as Polish, English, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Russian, Ukrainian, and Italian.
Affiliations and Collaborations
The philosopher is a member of the American Academy in Rome (MECEVS '96) and has been a fellow since 1996. He also serves on the scientific boards of "Przegląd Filozoficzny," "Borussia," and the "Philosophy and Religion" series published by the Faculty of Philosophy at Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw.
His collaborations extend to notable Polish newspapers ("Gazeta Wyborcza," "Rzeczpospolita," "Życie Warszawy"), academic journals ("Twórczość," "Dialog," "Literatura na świecie"), and television and radio stations. He has also contributed to Russian-language publications.
