Alger of Liège
Alger of Liège was a Catholic scholastic philosopher and writer who authored numerous theological treatises.
Early Life and Education
Alger began his education at the monastic school in Liège. He later served as a deacon and scholastic at the Church of St. Bartholomew in Liège.
Career in Liège
In 1100, Alger became the secretary to Bishop Obert and the custodian of the Liège Cathedral. He also managed the church school and handled its external correspondence. Despite receiving offers from other bishops, Alger remained in Liège for 20 years, until the death of Bishop Obert.
Joining the Abbey of Cluny
After the death of Bishop Frederick in 1121, Alger joined the renowned Benedictine Abbey of Cluny. He spent the last decade of his life there.
Writings
Alger wrote a refutation of Berengar of Tours' Eucharistic doctrine, which was highly praised by both Peter the Venerable and Erasmus of Rotterdam centuries later. Alger's other works include:

Several other works have been attributed to Alger, but their authorship remains uncertain.
