Early Life and Reign (864)

Zdeslav was the son of Trpimir I, the founder of the Trpimirović dynasty. Upon Trpimir I's death in 864, Zdeslav ascended to the throne as Prince of Croatia.

Revolt and Exile (865)

A year after his coronation, Zdeslav faced a rebellion led by Domagoj, an influential Croatian nobleman from Knin. Domagoj overthrew Zdeslav, forcing him and his brothers, Peter and Muncimir, to flee to Constantinople.

Byzantine Assistance and Return (878)

With the support of the Byzantine Empire, Zdeslav returned to Croatia in 878 and regained the title of Prince. However, he recognized the authority of Byzantine Emperor Basil I.

Conspiracies and Assassination (879)

In 879, a conspiracy organized by Branimir, a relative of Domagoj, led to Zdeslav's murder. Branimir, supported by those opposed to the growing Byzantine influence, succeeded Zdeslav as Prince.

Legacy

Branimir's reign marked a period of distancing from the Byzantine Empire and an alliance with the papacy, which resulted in Croatia gaining practical independence. Zdeslav's rule, while brief, played a significant role in the complex political landscape of medieval Croatia.
