Early Life and Military Service
Zisi Weizman was born in the city of Bălți, Moldova. After completing his compulsory military service in 1968, he enrolled in the Pushkin Higher Military Construction College (now the Military Engineering and Technical University). He served as an officer in the railway troops of the Soviet Army in the Far Eastern Military District, where he participated in the construction of the Baikal-Amur Mainline.
Cultural Activism in Samara
In 1986, with the rank of major, Weizman was transferred to Samara. There, he became an active member of the Jewish community organization "Tarbut la'am" (Culture for the People) and co-founded the newspaper "Tarbut." He served as deputy editor-in-chief of the newspaper and head of the Jewish editorial board of "Radio-7."
Literary Career
Weizman began publishing his poems at the age of twenty, primarily in the Moscow journal "Sovietish Heymland" and the newspaper "Birobidzhaner Shtern." His poems in Russian were included in the anthology "Soviet Jewish Poetry" (1985), while his Yiddish poems were published in the collection "Horizontn" (Horizons) in 1987. A selection of his poems translated into Russian by Leonid Shkolnik was published as a separate book in Samara in 1992.
Life in Israel
Since 2006, Weizman has resided in Beersheba, Israel. He continues to publish his work in independent online publications and the New York Yiddish newspaper "Forverts."
