Early Career and Professional Debut

Zlatko Zahović, a renowned Slovenian footballer, began his playing career at NK Kovinar Maribor. In 1989, he turned professional with Partizan Belgrade, where he showcased his exceptional skills until 1993. During the 1990/91 season, he spent a period on loan at Proleter Zrenjanin.

International Success

Zahović's international debut came in 1992 against Cyprus. He played a pivotal role in Slovenia's qualification for the Euro 2000 Championship, where he scored three of the team's four goals during the tournament. Slovenia also qualified for the 2002 World Cup, but a conflict with coach Srečko Katanec led to Zahović's dismissal from the team after their opening match. Upon Katanec's resignation, Zahović returned to the national side, making his final appearance in 2004. With 80 caps and 35 goals, he remains Slovenia's all-time leading scorer and appearance holder.

Club Career in Portugal, Greece, and Spain

In 1993, Zahović transferred to Vitória Guimarães in Portugal. His impressive performances caught the attention of FC Porto, where he spent three seasons. He then joined Olympiakos in Greece in 1999, but a dispute with the club's management led him to switch to Valencia in Spain. With Valencia, he participated in the 2001 UEFA Champions League Final, but his penalty was saved by Bayern Munich's Oliver Kahn. After one season, Zahović returned to Portugal to play for Benfica, where he retired in 2005.

Reputation and Controversies

Zahović gained notoriety for his numerous disputes with coaches. His clash with Katanec during the 2002 World Cup was particularly contentious. He also had conflicts at Olympiakos and Valencia. Additionally, Zahović was known for his outspoken comments, such as his confident predictions about Slovenia's performance in international competitions.

Post-Retirement Career

After his retirement, Zahović became the Sporting Director of NK Maribor. He has also served as a commentator and analyst for football matches. Zahović remains an influential figure in Slovenian football, celebrated for his exceptional skills and contributions to the national team and various European clubs.
