Early Life and Activism

Zofia Moraczewska was born into a prominent family in Lwów, Poland, in 1863. She graduated from teacher training courses in 1889 and began working as a school teacher. From her early years, she was involved in the Polish socialist underground movement.

Political and Women's Rights Activism

In 1896, Moraczewska joined the Polish Social Democratic Party of Galicia and Silesia. She married Andrzej Moraczewski, a prominent party member. Her activism extended to the Polish women's union and cooperative organizations, where she advocated for independence, socialism, and suffrage.

In 1916, Moraczewska became the leader of the League of Galician and Silesian Women, which later merged with a women's paramilitary organization to form the League of Polish Women. During World War I, she served as a nurse and clashed with Catholic clerics.

Polish Independence and Post-War Activism

After Poland regained independence, Moraczewska led the Warsaw women's organization of the Polish Socialist Party (PPS). She protested the discrimination against women in government and pushed for legislation on women's political equality.

In the 1920s, Moraczewska came into conflict with the PPS leadership over her support for the March Constitution. She left the PPS and played a significant role in the May Coup of 1926, bringing Józef Piłsudski back to power. She established the Women's Civic Union of Labor, becoming one of the largest women's organizations in Poland.

Under German and Communist Occupation

During the German occupation, Moraczewska and her husband supported the cooperative movement and helped victims of the war. Her husband was killed in 1944. After the war, Moraczewska distanced herself from politics but remained involved in writing history.

Legacy

Zofia Moraczewska was a pioneering Polish socialist, feminist, and political activist. She fought for independence, women's rights, and social justice. Her name and legacy continue to inspire women's rights and political movements worldwide.
