The Birth of Zurabagan
In the summer of 1996, three professionally trained musicians from Uzbekistan returned to Crimea in search of a keyboard player. They stumbled upon a 13-year-old boy named Picasso, who had already gained experience in a folk-jazz band and had earned his nickname due to his unique perspective.
The Beginning: Last Inch
Despite his age, Picasso's talent was undeniable, and he joined the group the following year. Along with Nariman Umerov on vocals, they formed "Last Inch" in 1998. The group quickly gained local recognition and began performing on television and in concerts.
The Rise of VIP
In 1999, Last Inch transformed into VIP, releasing their debut album, "Strong." Their popularity soared, culminating in a highly acclaimed concert attended by thousands. However, cracks began to appear within the band.
Transition to Zurabagan
Picasso and Umerov grew dissatisfied with their pop-oriented sound and decided to explore their musical roots. They left VIP and reconnected as a duo, inviting top-tier musicians from Kiev to collaborate on their new album. On May 1, 2000, they shed the VIP moniker and embraced their new identity as Zurabagan.
International Breakthrough
Zurabagan's debut single, "We Are Just," gained traction in the United States when friends translated the lyrics into English. The song received airplay on FM USA stations and later spread throughout Central and Eastern Europe.
The Jump Album and MTV
In 2001, Zurabagan released their iconic album, "Jump," which showcased their innovative blend of alternative rock and electronic elements. The single "Nothing Will Happen" became their first music video, gaining widespread airplay on MTV Russia.
National and International Recognition
Zurabagan's popularity skyrocketed, leading to a successful Russian tour in 2002. They shared the stage with renowned bands like Tequillajazzz and received accolades for their captivating live performances. Their music videos continued to dominate music channels, further solidifying their status as rising stars.
Future Endeavors
In the coming years, Zurabagan plans to release an English-language album, tour extensively, and collaborate with legendary sound producer Lenny Kravitz. They also intend to participate in the prestigious Roskilde Festival in Denmark. As they continue to push musical boundaries and captivate audiences worldwide, Zurabagan remains a force to be reckoned with in the music industry.
