Early Life and EducationDavid Arnold Zigman was born in San Diego, California and graduated from Point Loma High School. He pursued his education at the University of California, Los Angeles. While still a student, Zigman signed a contract with Almo Irving and wrote songs for Carly Simon, the television show Fame, and collaborated with David Lasley, Jerry Knight, and Steve Cropper.
Early Career and Collaborations
In 1983, Zigman began studying with his cousin George Bassman, a renowned orchestrator known for his work on films such as "The Wizard of Oz," "Marty," and "The Postman Always Rings Twice." By the 1980s, Zigman had established himself as a sought-after studio musician and penned the chart-topping pop hit "Crush On You" for the group The Jets. He also produced and arranged music for Aretha Franklin and Natalie Cole under Clive Davis.
Musical Arrangements and Collaborations
Zigman's exceptional talent as an arranger, writer, and producer led him to work with a wide range of renowned singers and entertainers, including Ray Charles, Sting, Phil Collins, Dionne Warwick, Boz Scaggs, Tina Turner, Seal, Carly Simon, The Pointer Sisters, Huey Lewis, Jennifer Holliday, Patti LaBelle, Chicago, Natalie Cole, and Christina Aguilera.
Film Scoring Career
In the 1990s, Zigman began composing for films, creating soundtracks for movies such as "Mulan," "What's Love Got to Do with It," "The Birdcage," "License to Kill," "The Golf Club," and "Pocahontas." His first major film score came with 2002's "John Q," which opened the door to composing for larger-scale productions, including "The Notebook" in 2004. Zigman also composed music for three "Step Up" films and three Madea movies.
