Early Life and Education
Born into a Jewish family in Wayne, Pennsylvania, Abbi Jacobson was raised by artist Susan Komm and graphic designer Alan Jacobson. She attended Valley Forge Middle School and Conestoga High School before pursuing an arts degree at the Maryland Institute College of Art. During her junior year, she transferred to Emerson College before returning to Maryland Institute College of Art, graduating in 2006.
Career Beginnings
After graduating, Jacobson moved to New York City, where she honed her craft at the Atlantic Theater Company and Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. It was at Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre that she met Ilana Glazer, with whom she would later collaborate on "Broad City."
"Broad City"
From 2009 to 2011, Jacobson and Glazer starred in and wrote the web series "Broad City," which chronicled their experiences in New York City. The series garnered critical acclaim and an ECNY Award nomination for Best Web Series. Jacobson and Glazer also adapted the series into a live stage show, "Broad City Live," which they performed at Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre.
In 2011, FX acquired the script for a "Broad City" television series, with Amy Poehler as executive producer. However, the network ultimately passed on the project. Jacobson and Glazer subsequently pitched the show to Comedy Central, which picked it up and ordered a pilot episode. The series premiered on January 22, 2014, and became a critical and ratings success.
Illustrations
In addition to her acting work, Jacobson is also an accomplished illustrator. In 2013, she released two coloring books, "Color This Book: New York City" and "Color This Book: San Francisco," through Chronicle Books. She also illustrated "Carry This Book" for Viking Press, which became a New York Times bestseller upon its release in October 2016.
