Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib: Early Life and Lineage
Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib, the paternal uncle of the Prophet Muhammad, was born in Mecca in 566 CE to Abd al-Muttalib and Nutayla. He was the penultimate of Abd al-Muttalib's numerous sons.
Abbas's Role in Muhammad's Ministry
Initially, عباس did not accept Islam when Muhammad began preaching. However, their close bonds influenced Abbas's eventual conversion. After the Battle of Badr in 624 CE, a pivotal victory for the Prophet's followers against the Quraysh tribe, Abbas embraced Islam. His influential position played a crucial role in the conversion of many Quraysh tribesmen.
Support for Muhammad and the Conquest of Mecca
Abbas actively supported Muhammad in his conquest of Mecca in 630 CE. He served as a trusted friend and advisor during the Prophet's lifetime and beyond. Upon Muhammad's death in 632 CE, Abbas and Ali willingly assumed the task of preparing his body for burial.
Abbas's Legacy and the Abbasid Dynasty
Abbas passed away in 652 CE, leaving behind a legacy of honor and respect. His eldest son, Abdullah ibn Abbas, became the founder of the Abbasid Dynasty. In 750 CE, Abdullah's grandson, Abu al-Abbas, ascended to the throne of the Baghdad Caliphate. The Abbasid Dynasty ruled until its overthrow by Hulagu Khan, the grandson of Genghis Khan, in 1258 CE.
Abd al-Muttalib and the Hulaguids
Hulagu Khan established the Hulaguid Dynasty, which governed Iran and other territories until the mid-14th century. The dynasty's founder, Abd al-Muttalib's younger son, was assassinated or fled to Egypt, where he passed on the title of Caliph and the spiritual authority over Muslims to his descendants. This authority remained in their family until the Ottoman sultans assumed it in 1517 CE.
