Biography of Christina of Denmark

Princess Christina of Denmark was born in November 1521 or on December 5th, and she was the youngest of six children of King Christian II of Denmark and Isabella of Habsburg. Her exact place of birth is unknown, but it is believed that she was born in Nyborg or Copenhagen. She was the niece of Emperor Charles V and belonged to the Habsburg dynasty, which made her a desirable match for many European rulers.

At the age of 11, Christina married Francesco II Sforza, Duke of Milan. However, her husband passed away when she was just 13 years old, leaving her a childless widow. In 1541, she married Francis I, Duke of Lorraine, and they had three children together. Christina's regency in Lorraine was marked by her friendly policy towards Spain and her attempts to maintain neutrality in the conflict between France and the Holy Roman Empire.

Christina's marriage plans with King Henry VIII of England did not come to fruition, as the Emperor lost interest in an alliance with England after signing a peace treaty with France. In her later years, Christina spent six years in exile before returning to France in 1558. She played a role in mediating peace between France and Spain and assisted her son in governing the Duchy of Lorraine. Christina passed away in 1590 and was buried alongside her husband in Nancy, France.

Although her father had officially renounced his claims to the Danish throne, Christina never acknowledged this fact and claimed her rights to the Danish throne. From 1563 to 1569, she signed official documents as the "Queen of Denmark," but she never attempted to seize the throne by force.
